Science Gallery Atlanta Now Hiring Student Mediators

Science Gallery Atlanta is delighted to announce that we are opening our first round of applications for students to gain experience in science communications and public engagement as mediators in our upcoming exhibition, HOOKED: When Want Becomes Need, opening in early 2022 in central Atlanta.

This is a paid position ($15/hour).

We are actively seeking creative and highly motivated students from all backgrounds and fields of study to help us leverage art and science to address societal challenges such as addiction, social justice, and climate impact. 

Student mediators serve a critical role in the Science Gallery experience: they contextualize content and provoke and guide discussion with gallery visitors.  (Please see below for more information about the role student mediators will serve at Science Gallery Atlanta.)

Science Gallery specifically targets 15- to 25-year-olds as its core audience – we believe these are the future leaders who will understand the complexities of global challenges and bring solutions to action.

What Do Mediators Do?

Most galleries have signs which give you some information about an exhibition. Science Gallery is different - our mediators are on the exhibition floor at all times, interacting with visitors and engaging them in conversations about all of the head-scratching, future-facing questions posed by the pieces and the themes.

In searching for the perfect mediator we look for people who have:

  • A proven interest in science, art, design, or technology;

  • Excellent verbal communication skills and a willingness to strike up a conversation with a perfect stranger;

  • An adaptable, flexible, and confident personality;

  • The ability to be a self-starter, and eagerness to learn and develop new skills;

  • An active and varied combination of interests, subject specialties, and/or language skills

The mediator team is a diverse group of people, each bringing their unique experiences, interests, skills and talents to the fore. Successful applicants have a great knowledge of Science Gallery, our mission, and what it is we do.
