Natasha Caruana
Artist Natasha Caruana used British government data to identify the top ten United Kingdom towns with the highest divorce rates. She discovered that contrary to the common fantasy of a perfect life by the sea, all were economically deprived coastal towns with high levels of alcoholism and gambling. In this film, Natasha and her husband meet on their first wedding anniversary to perform a ‘data dance’ by a tumultuous sea. Each gesture embodies competing pressures on a relationship, from gambling to codependency.
Natasha Caruana is a London-based artist working across photography, moving image and installation. Her work begins autobiographically, exploring narratives of love, betrayal and fantasy, underpinned by a performative and playful approach. Her work is created drawing from archives, the Internet and personal accounts. She is a Senior Lecturer of Photography at the University of the Arts London.
