How do we better understand justice through the filter of coffee?
In this event for our JUSTICE COFFEE COMPANY installation, Phyllis Johnson of BD Imports and the Coffee Coalition for Racial Equity will lead visitors in a discussion and tasting experience that helps us better understand justice in the coffee industry. Justice in coffee can be examined through a multitude of lenses, be it the income disparity or unfair distribution of profits within the global supply chain that starts with the farmer and ends with the barista. How can consumers realize this disparity and what power do they hold in demanding justice in the cup?
The Coffee Coalition for Racial Equity (CCRE) is an organization formed to take on the challenge of racial equity in the coffee industry. It was founded in 2020 as a non-profit organization with a mission to build a more racially diverse and equitable coffee industry where talents are recognized and developed to the fullest potential and rewarded. The organization achieves its mission by building pathways that help advance Black individuals working in coffee beyond retail. It builds its programs through an inclusive framework with everyone at the table, seeking to share in knowledge and resources. The programs include partnerships that provide internships, mentorships, and educational scholarships.
This event is free and open to the public.
