Acknowledging is hard, and healing is even harder, but both are possible. In Science Gallery Atlanta's first virtual series, CONNECT AND COPE, we explore coping mechanisms and how to develop a resilient mindset with a sense of compassion and kindness.


EP. 1

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, Jericho Brown, shares with us his poem “Bullet Points” from his bestselling book “The Tradition,” and his views on the importance of creativity in connecting to the greater society. Jericho, Director of the Creative Writing Program at Emory University, discusses how he copes with the mundane and traumatic stressors through self-expression. Watch it here.

Dana Haugaard is an artist who works with sound and sensation, a Lecturer for Emory's Art History Department, and is the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Integrated Visual Arts Co-Major. We join Dana in his studio for a demonstration of the physicality of nostalgia and memory. Dr. Joseph Mathias is an Addiction Psychiatrist at Emory Healthcare and an assistant professor at Emory's School of Medicine, Joseph shares important information about substance abuse. From young adults' substance usage during the pandemic to people with loved ones suffering from addiction, Joseph provides a wealth of knowledge that we all need to hear. Watch it here.


In this episode, we are joined by Gary Motley, Dion Liverpool, and Dr. Steven Levy. Gary (professor of performance and the director of jazz studies at Emory University), Dion (artist affiliate in hip hop at Emory’s Department of Music), and Steven (professor of psychiatry and vice-chair, department of psychiatry and behavior sciences at Emory University School of Medicine) join us for an engaging discussion on the connection between music and mental health. Dr. Abigail Lott, licensed clinical psychologist and assistant professor at Emory’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, focuses her work on using mindfulness as an intervention for trauma-related disorders. Rabbi Jordan Braunig is the Jewish Chaplain at Emory University and seeks to provide religious, educational, social justice, and interfaith leadership to the community. Jordan outlines the importance of spirituality when experiencing hardship and what we can learn from ancient, faith traditions in order to cope with the emotional stressors of today. Watch it here.

Dr. Bobbi Patterson, Professor Emeritus of Emory’s Department of Religion, has spent her career researching resiliency; from ecological models of breakdown to contemplative practices that foster resiliency. Bobbi describes the concept of resiliency, how it is seen in nature, and how can we utilize the model of resiliency to deal with the challenges that the pandemic produces. Watch it here.
